Toxic Love
A video performance with Nuno Sabroso
A dance that shows the mixing of styles, performed in various iconic locations in London, with a number of different outfits, and filmed by a professional videographer (Giampaolo Trojani). The routine includes basic moves of Rumba, Tango, Paso Doble, as well as Street Dance, Burlesque and Contemporary. Both Nuno and Giulia lead and follow or simply dance synchronised moves, switching between roles in an organic way.
The frames alternate rapidly, showing different moods: the first scene was shot at the old Nomadic Garden in Shoreditch where a huge graffiti in the background reads “The international meeting of styles”; other scenes include as a roaring 20s look in a green park, an elegant look in front of Tower Bridge, and a daring burlesque look. The burlesque scene in particular challenges gender roles: walking towards the camera, Giulia hides behind two folding fans, only for Nuno to emerge from behind them walking away from the camera in dizzying heels. Towards the end, there seems to be a glitch in the system when Nuno and Giulia appear twice in the same frame, as if in a multidimensional performance. The video ends with Giulia eating popcorn over Nuno’s dead body.
