Queering DanceSport Movement Research
A movement research project funded by Culture Moves Europe and carried out by Giulia Settomini and Harpy Fatale.
This study, which took place in Berlin in June 2024, focused on movement research and aimed to develop a neutral vocabulary that could facilitate the emergence of new narratives in DanceSport. For about three weeks we carried daily rehearsals in which rehearsal we tried to explore questions such as:
How do we perceive the body when we dance as a leader or as a follower?
Does our perception of ourselves as masculine or feminine change depending on the role we are dancing in?
Can we lead in a feminine way or follow in a masculine way?
Can we lead and follow in a completely neutral way?
Is it possible to bring more flow and organic movement into Latin dance? What is needed to make this possible? Would it help to create the music after the movement (instead of the other way round)?
How does the clothing affect how we feel? How does it affect our performance of gender but also of dance?
The research methods included changing roles, working with basic Latin moves, performing contact improvisation, cross dressing and gender performance. We took daily notes and a video diary of our feelings and emotions during each rehearsal. At the end of the three weeks we did a video and photo shoot to capture some of our findings.
